TV: Primeval Hope

After six steps back through three episodes, Primeval took a gigantic step forward with the fourth episode. Guns, support teams, Lucy Brown letting her hair down as Jenny Lewis. There was a certain logic to this episode that worked.

Sure, Lucien's being dragged underwater by the baddies in the opening scene, with nary a reaction from his mates while tracking down the basketball they ALL were playing with, seemed strained. So was the night-time search of the canal, without the use of the underwater sub, that was there for day-time viewing. And the Hidden Agenda team once again gets sloppy, which IS complained about by the revealed head of the plot in the late-show 'shock' ending.

But the rest was pretty good. Connor and Abby actually made some progress. The scissor kick setup and payoff actually worked. And I think one of the secrets to a good Primeval show is a liberal dose of Ben Miller as the sarcastic head bureaucrat Lester. His cynical snarkiness makes for a good counterpoint to Cutter's optimism.

Next week, we'll see a take on Tremors by way of Pitch Black. If it's as good as this week's updo on the Creature from the Black Lagoon, then the season might be saved yet.
